The change of direction is the angle between the set direction and line &#8220;A-B&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>15.19.2<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>Task data:<\/p>\n<p>a.description of point &#8220;A&#8221; and &#8220;B&#8221;<br \/>\nb.set direction<br \/>\nc.minimum and maximum distances from &#8220;A&#8221; to &#8220;B&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>15.19.3<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>The result is the angle between the set direction and the line &#8220;A-B&#8221;. Greatest result is best.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Competition Ballooning &#8211; Angle<\/p>\n<p>The rule (or information) for this task is set out in Chapter 15 of the Event Rules<\/p>\n<p>This is the last and therefore newest of the tasks in the rule book; devised by Uwe Schneider of Germany it was first used in 2001.\u00a0 It can be consider<span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed as an elbow where the first leg has already been decided and you are left to complete the second.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is often set as a follow-on task instead of a fly on and can be used with markers as well as the FAI loggers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The task data gives you the \u201cset\u201d direction or angle and you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0try to \u2018steer\u2019 as far away from this direction as possible within the minimum a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd maximum distances given. In\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the example (Figure 1) the task has been<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0set after a pilot declared goal (PDG).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Point A will therefore be your marker drop for the PDG and not the PDG goal itself. In your flight planning you will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">draw the set direction from your PDG\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">realising this may have to be adjusted should you not be able to get there.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Point B will be your marker drop or logger point somewhere between the minimum and maximum distances given.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276,&quot;469777462&quot;:[1440,1701,2268],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The competition director\u00a0may\u00a0give the set direction midway between the furthest wind to the left and the furthest wind to the right such that you\u00a0have to\u00a0judge whether it is best\u00a0to try to move left of the set direction or right of it. Just as in the\u00a0Elbow (Aerostat Vol.47.2 April 2016)\u00a0this task is best set when best wind is neither that closest to the ground or that\u00a0at the highest altitude you can obtain in the competition area; in those\u00a0situations, it induces pilots to fly very close to the ground with the possibility of annoying animals\u00a0and farmers\u00a0or climbing rapidly with the dangers of fast climbs in a competition.\u00a0Also, as in the Elbow, it is best that this task is not set when you can achieve 180<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><sup>o<\/sup><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276,&quot;469777462&quot;:[1440,1701,2268],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One\u00a0has to\u00a0be aware that the forecast winds may well have changed between the briefing and the time you arrive at point A. If in a morning task,\u00a0and\u00a0the lower level wind is close to the ground\u00a0then this may\u00a0veer as the low-level\u00a0inversion disappears as the sun rises. You may also have to\u00a0consider\u00a0whether your predicted track will take you over open ground or over built up areas,\u00a0farms or powerlines\u00a0where you will have to climb. You need to take note of whether the ground rises in front of you on\u00a0your predicted\u00a0track or whether there is a deep valley along the track\u00a0that\u00a0may be advantageous to drop into. For a track to the right at height you may find that, as in the\u00a0example, you will move left to start with before you find the desired track at height. Therefore, the longer you remain at that\u00a0\u2018best\u2019\u00a0height\u00a0once attained\u00a0the more the angle will increase from point A. In the\u00a0example, you will note that the wind\u00a0slowly backed\u00a0once the pilot attained the \u2018best height\u2019\u00a0such\u00a0that after 4 km the angle started\u00a0to get smaller.\u00a0It is important always to keep that line from point A to your position\u00a0current\u00a0to make sure that the angle\u00a0does not start to deteriorate once in the scoring band. If it starts to deteriorate and you do not think you can improve\u00a0further\u00a0on it and you are between point A and point B then that is the time to drop your marker.\u00a0In the\u00a0figure,\u00a0the\u00a0maximum\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">angle is reached after 4km and then starts to turn back. At the event in Belgium it\u00a0was set as the last task in a four-task morning flight. Point A was separate from the previous task; it was the first track point (using the FAI loggers) after passing Eastings 70800. The set direction was 320<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><sup>o<\/sup><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. By the time we got to the line it was quite late in the morning and the winds quite light. There was a very narrow band of air that would take you just east of north, giving you a possible angle of just over 45<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><sup>o<\/sup><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The difficulty here was that the wind would take you back over the line 70800 so it took most of\u00a0us\u00a0several attempts to just cross the line before dropping down into the narrow band and going back across (which was allowed) The narrow\u00a0band was only about 50ft high while\u00a0the wind above or below took you off in a north-north-westerly direction. The minimum and maximum distances were 5 and 6 kilometres so you had to press your next logger mark between those two distances.\u00a0 It required\u00a0intense concentration to keep your balloon in that narrow band.
